Raksha Bandhan is an important annual festival of Hindus . This word is a synthesis of two Sanskrit words Raksha + Abandhan. Raksha signifies defence and Abandhan denotes the amulet. On the eve of Raksha Bandhan 2022 sisters tie a taliman called Rakhi around the wrists of brother and receive not only gift in return from brothers and but also a pledge for their safety and defense.

This festival is celebrated in India and other parts of Asian subcontinent and the parts of the world where Hindu population dwells. This festival has some other local names also such as Salemo, Rakhi, Rakhdi etc. The Raksha Bandhan festival falls on Purnima (Full Moon) of Shravan.

The festival as a mark of protection and affection is celebrated with great religious fervor among the Hindu,Sikh and Jain families and this can be equated to the Bhai Dooj festival also. Raksha Bandhan History

The history of Raksha Bandhan can be traced back to Indian mythology. During Mahabharat time the story of Raksha Bandhan is related with the event when Lord Krishna got a wound on his finger and blood was oozing. Looking at the blood Draupadi tore a piece of her saree and covered the wound. The piece of Saree since then becomes a sacred thread. Lord Krishna swore to protect her from all hardships. While the untoward occurrence happened and Draupadi was dragged to the court and Dussasan tried to strip off her saree, Lord Krishna as a Saviour appeared and provided immeasurable reams of Saree to keep her covered. Indian history is replete with the instances of celebration of Hindu festival Raksha Bandhan. Another mythology of Raksha Bandhan is associated with Raja Bali and Goddess Lakshmi. As king Bali was so devoted to Lord Vishnu that Lord decided to leave his realm of Vaikunth and came to Bali to reside with him, Goddess Lakshmi became much perplexed on account of bereavement from lord. She come in the guise of a Brahmin girl and put Rakhi on Bali king’s wrist and made him her brother. The recent evidence of Rakhi is present in the medieval Indian history. Rani Karmawati was a widow queen of chittor. She was scared of the invasion by the Muslim sultan of Gujrat Bahadur Shah. She sent an emblem protection (Rakhi) to Mughal emperor Humayun for her kingdom’s safety. The emperor was overpowered by this gesture and moved to Chittor with his army. Thus he saved the queen and her empire from the danger.

This festival of Rakhi is so important that Gurudev Rabindra Nath Tagor started a mass Raksha Bandhan festival during the British regime in 1905 during the partition of Bengal done by Lord Kurzan.

On the auspicious day of Raksha Bandhan go for a shower in the morning and pray to Gods and goddesses and your family deities. Later prepare a plate of silver or Copper with roli, rice, sandal, prasadan flowers and incense. This plate with water should be placed in place of worship. After prayers the brother should face towards the East with covered head, sister first of all parts a mark with roli, rice and sandal powder on the forehead of brother and throw same parts of the ingredients on the brother, sister does this to avoid the evil eye spell on brother. Later she ties Rakhi on the right hand wrist of the brother and gives mouthwatering sweets. Both of them reciprocate the same. the brother in return ensures the safety of sister and also adds gifts of fabrics, jewellery etc.
