Why the surah was named Al-Inshiqaq?
Surah al Inshiqaq was named “Al-Inshiqaq” as follows:
The first verse of Surah Al-Inshiqaq contains the word “Split” as the verse is telling:
“إِذَا السَّمَاء انشَقَّتْ”
and therefore the name of the Surah Inshiqaq name meaning “The Splitting” which is the source of the verb split. This Split will happen to the sky on the Day of Resurrection and on that day the earth will be different than the earth we all know, and therefore the surah took this name “The Splitting” as this image was known among the Companions describing the scenes of The Day Of Judgement.

As we know that the Holy Quran is full of benefits as it enriches our spiritual life and gives us peace and happiness.
The benefits of “Inshiqaq” is like the superiority of the rest of the Surahs of the Noble Quran. In reciting it, as in reciting the Holy Quran, a Muslim will get a great reward and a great bounty that only Allah knows, as The prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: (Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah has a good deed for it, and a good deed is ten like it, I don’t say “Alif lam meem” is a letter, but “Alif” is a letter, “Lam” is a letter, and “Meem” is a letter.
Surah al-inshiqaq, its virtues, and benefits, The Messenger(peace be upon him) would prostate every time he recited surat al inshiqaq, and he would urge his companions to read it because of the facts, horrors, and events that were mentioned in it that describe the Day of Resurrection as if the contemplative reader of its verses looked at the Day of Resurrection. The resurrection is the opinion of the eye.
And its merit is also in embracing the rulings and commands that Allah Almighty has sent for His Muslim servants in His Noble Book, such as urging belief in Allah, fearing Allah in secret and in public, and taking lessons from its noble verses.
Hadith on surah al-inshiqaq
Several hadiths have been proven about surah ishiqaq, and among the hadiths that came about Al-Inshiqaq
are the following:
The Messenger, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, prostrated every time he recited it, and he urged his companions to read it because of the facts, horrors, and events that describe the Day of Resurrection.
The first Hadith
There is a hadith that was narrated on the authority of Abu Rafi’ that he said: (I prayed with Abu Hurairah Isha Prayer(Night Prayer), and he read: “If the sky has split” Surah then he prostrated, so I asked him “what was that?” He told me that “ I was praying behind Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) and he had done it [Prostrating], I am following him and I will continue doing that [Prostrating] in it until I meet with him [in paradise].)
Reference {Al-Bukhari and Muslim}.
The second Hadith
On the authority of Ibn Umar – may Allah be pleased with him – he said: The Messenger of Allah – may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him – said: (Whoever would like to look at the Day of Resurrection as if he had seen an eye, let him read: (When the sun is rounded) and (If the sky is breaking out).
The third Hadith
Muslim narrated in his Sahih on the authority of Abu Salamah bin Abd al-Rahman: (Abu Hurayrah recited to them: “When the sky has split open,” and he prostrated in it, and when he finished, he told them that the Messenger of Allah – may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him -: He prostrated in it).
What is the main theme of surah inshiqaq?
Any Surah in the Holy Quran delivers plenty of messages and meanings not only for Muslims but also to the whole of Mankind to make think about the aim of life which is to worship Allah so they can live happily and then get rewarded in the afterlife if they follow Allah’s commandments and practice them.
Surah al-inshiqaq can be divided into four themes as follows:
The first them
Contains the beginning of Al-Inshiqaq, which mentions some scenes of the Hereafter and the end of the universe from the splitting of the heavens and the leveling of the earth.
The second theme
Allah explains in the verses Al-Inshiqaq continues to say that for him who is given the record of his deeds with his right hand believing in Allah, he will have an easy reckoning and return to his family in Paradise.
As for the one who is given the record of his deeds behind his back, and he is a disbeliever in Allah, he will be called for destruction and perdition, and he will enter the Hellfire, consuming its heat. He was happy and arrogant in his family in this world, he did not think about the consequences, and he thought that he would not return to his Creator alive. Indeed, Allah will restore him as he began and make him pay back for his evil deeds, and Allah was with him All-Seeing, All-Knowing of his condition from the day he was created until he was resurrected.
The third theme
Allah presents the position of the polytheists in the Holy Qur’an and the oath that they will receive horrors and hardships.
After that Inshiqaq tells us:
Allah The Almighty has sworn by the redness of the horizon at sunset, and by the night and the gathering of animals, insects, vermin, and so on, and by the moon, which lights perfectly, and by making you people transfer from a phase to another through different states: from the sperm to the leech to the embryo to blowing of the soul in Man’s body to death to resurrection. For that, It is not permissible for any creature to swear by other than Allah, and if he did that, he would have committed polytheism.
The fourth theme
Surah ishiqaq ends by:
Marvels at the condition of those who abandon faith despite the clarity of Allah’s signs and proofs, and threatens and warns them if they do not repent. And all those glorious and great Qur’anic touches that affect the soul are transmitted to the scenes of the Day of Resurrection, and the events that will happen on this day such as judgment and recompense, and the coming of all of that in short verses; All of this indicates the inimitability of the Noble Qur’an, its greatness and its eloquence, and that it is from Allah and that Allah revealed it to guide all people so that they believe in Him alone, worship Him with the right of worship and don’t associate anything with Him.

surah inshiqaq in English
In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful.
- When the sky is rented asunder,
- And hearkens to (the Command of) its Lord, and it must needs (do so);-
- And when the earth is flattened out,
- And casts forth what is within it and becomes (clean) empty,
- And hearkens to (the Command of) its Lord,- and it must needs (do so);- (then will come Home the full reality).
- O, thou man! Verily thou art ever toiling on towards thy Lord- painfully toiling,- but thou shalt meet Him.
- Then he who is given his Record in his right hand,
- Soon will his account be taken by an easy reckoning,
- And he will turn to his people, rejoicing!
- But he who is given his Record behind his back,-
- Soon will he cry for perdition,
- And he will enter a Blazing Fire.
- Truly, did he go about among his people, rejoicing!
- Truly, did he think that he would not have to return (to Us)!
- Nay, nay! for his Lord was (ever) watchful of him!
- So I do call to witness the ruddy glow of Sunset;
- The Night and its Homing;
- And the Moon in her fullness:
- Ye shall surely travel from stage to stage.
- What then is the matter with them, that they believe not?-
- And when the Quran is read to them, they fall not prostrate,
- But on the contrary, the Unbelievers reject (it).
- But Allah has full knowledge of what they secrete (in their breasts)
- So announce to them a Penalty Grievous,
- Except to those who believe and work righteous deeds: For them is a reward that will never fail.

Surah inshiqaq summary:
As we all know that every Surah of the Holy Quran is delivering a bunch of meanings so Muslims and non-Muslims can learn lessons from it.
Surat Al Inshiqaq deals with the horrors of the Day of Resurrection and what people will see on this day.
Surah ishiqaq also talks about the radical changes that will occur in the entire universe on that great day.
Surah al-Inshiqaq also is talking about Man and what he does in this world and the consequences of his actions, either with punishment or with reward, as Allah Almighty is higher and knows best.
Surah al Inshiqaq also talks about the polytheists, their denial of the verses of Allah, their fate on the Day of Resurrection with a painful punishment, and immortality in the Fire. Al-Inshiqaq ends by blaming the polytheists and disbelievers for their disbelief in Allah despite the clarity of the verses and miracles that the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, brought.
