Dialectical behavioral therapy is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy. Originally developed to help people with borderline personality disorder, it works by teaching skills to manage emotions, reduce conflict in relationships and improve quality of life. The goal of DBT is to help people cope with anxiety without making it worse. This form of therapy can help people cope better with stressful situations, such as breaking up with a partner after an argument, and help reduce destructive or harmful (to themselves and/or others) behavior when they feel overwhelmed and upset.
DBT focuses on helping people acquire skills that improve their quality of life, particularly emotion regulation skills, interpersonal effectiveness skills, and anxiety tolerance skills. Although DBT focuses on the present moment and what you can do now to improve your life, this does not mean that the model does not recognize how past experiences can affect you in the present. In fact, most research points to disorders such as Borderline Personality (BPD) stemming from a history of trauma. In therapy, your therapist will use a mix of DBT and other trauma-informed therapy techniques to help you find the best combination of practice and support.
