Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation is referred to as NMES. NMES, commonly referred to as therapeutic electrical stimulation, helps muscles that have become weaker through inactivity by strengthening them. NMES causes muscle contraction and relaxation through a variety of pathways by activating motor neurons. Muscle Stimulation Devices are used to retrain muscles, reduce muscle spasms, enhance blood circulation, maintain or increase range of motion, and stop or prevent muscle atrophy. Neuromuscular Stimulation That Is Functional FNS uses electrical muscle stimulation to repair injured nerve pathways.
This is done with the expectation that spinal cord injury victims may be able to independently grip, stand, or walk, or at the very least, maintain adequate muscle tone and strength. Muscle Stimulation Devices include EMS therapy, which simulates the initial action potential from the central nervous system and the transmission of information through electrical impulses along the axon. Since EMS generates constant electrical impulses for the same, primarily during a sustained therapy session, this results in muscle contraction.
