A mineral called ilmenite contains titanium dioxide (TiO2). It is the most significant source of titanium and has an orthorhombic structure. Ilmenite is present in several metamorphosed iron deposits as well as igneous rocks. To add colour to paint or ink, ilmenite is used as a pigment in titanium dioxide materials. Chemically speaking, titanium dioxide can be found in a variety of forms, including titanium(IV) oxide and titanium dioxide. For the creation of titanium dioxide, ilmenite is employed in titanium metal materials. It performs the function of a pigment and has characteristics that make it resistant to other chemicals including acids, alkalis, and solvents.

Ilmenite is transformed into titanium dioxide pigment grade using either the sulphate method or the chloride process. Ilmenite can be enhanced and purified using the Becher process to produce rutile, a mineral used in paints, plastics, paper, food, and other products. Eastern and western Australia, Richards Bay, South Africa, Kerala, India, and the eastern and southern coasts of Brazil are the principal locations for ilmenite discovery.
