Trauma intersects in many different ways with culture, history, race, gender, place, and language. Trauma-informed systems recognize the compounded impact of structural inequality and respond to the unique needs of diverse communities. Cultural awareness, responsiveness, and understanding are critical to increasing access and improving the standard of care for traumatized children, families, and communities across the United States. Closing disparities in trauma services requires culturally sensitive engagement across service sectors, communities, organizations, neighborhoods, families, and individuals to reduce barriers, overcome stigma, address social adversity, strengthen families, and promote positive ethnic identity.
