After hydrostatic testing, any moisture left behind in the pipelines must be removed. It prevents the formation hydrates and protects from internal corrosion with light diesel oil burner. Drying can be accomplished using super dry air, methanol, inert gas such as nitrogen, and other methods.
Pipeline drying can be conducted mechanically, or by using an automated system. For example, pigging and swabbing is a common procedure that employs foam or other polymer devices to swab the pipeline. These pigs are usually made to fit the pipe's internal diameter and have a greater contact area with the pipes. This allows water to absorb more easily.
A powerful ventilator is then used to force a flow of extremely dry cold air through the pipeline, thereby removing any residual water that might have been left behind during hydrostatic testing. To ensure that the pipe is completely dried, dew point monitoring is done throughout the process.
Vacuum drying is another option for removing residual moisture from pipelines following hydrostatic testing. Once a stable vacuum pressure has been achieved, a pig device can be introduced at one end and driven to the other end for drying.
This method is a relatively simple and low-cost way to remove any remaining moisture from a pipe after hydrostatic testing. This is a great way to get rid of any remaining water or particulate impurities in your pipeline.
Nitrogen can be used to pack the pipe if it is intended for transporting hydrocarbons. This helps to ensure that the gas is kept separate from any other materials in the pipeline and therefore reduces the risk of a fire.
For small or medium-sized pipelines, high-pressure compressors are used with an attached air-drying unit. The compressors can deliver a maximum volume flow rate of up to 1,500 m3/h of pre-dried air at -50degC with a minimum pressure of 16 bar.
