When Can You Pray Fajr If You Missed It? Islam is the religion of mercy delivered to us by messenger Muhammed (PBUH), the prophet of mercy sent by Allah the most merciful. Prophet Muhammed didn’t come to make our lives hard and Allah the all-knowing knows that we are weak and vulnerable.
Muslims as all human beings are vulnerable to forgetting, mistaking, and oversleeping. Most of us sometimes miss a prayer due to forgetting or oversleeping,
especially Fajr Prayer due to sleeping late and waking up late. Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) explained to us what shall we do if we miss Fajr Prayer due to oversleeping or forgetting, as this was a common question asked to him by his companions (May Allah Be Pleased With Them) and he answered them by his Hadith narrated from Anas ibn Maalik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
“Whoever forgets a prayer, or sleeps and misses it let him pray it as soon as he remembers, for there is no expiation for it other than that.”
Muslim (684).
So whenever you oversleep or forget to perform Salat Fajr, then he has to perform it immediately when he wakes up or as soon as he remembers he missed praying it.
What is fajr prayer?
Every Muslim knows that he has to perform 5 obligatory prayers each day and each prayer has its fixed time.
Fajar Prayer is the first prayer of the day and it is two obligatory rak’ahs for every Muslim from dawn beginning and before sunrise. The sick person who cannot pray in the mosque can pray it in his house, and the woman also prays it at home before the sunrise. And the Muslims must take care of it and preserve it on time, and it is not permissible to delay it until sunrise, as some people do.
It is necessary to be careful and to preserve it on time, both men and women.
And it is prescribed to perform two rakah’s of sunnah prayer before it, as the Prophet, peace, and blessings are upon him, used to do.
So it should be observed in the Sunnah of Fajr, two light rak’ahs, in which he recites Al-Fatihah in both rak’ahs followed by another surah from the Quran or a part of a surah.
How to pray fajr?
Fajar Prayer is one of the obligatory five daily prayers of Muslims all over the world. The morning prayer (or dawn prayer) consists of two obligatory rak’as (2 obligatory kneelings). It also has a two rak’as sunnah non-obligatory prayer before it.
Its timing is after the dawn call to prayer (from dawn until sunrise) not after that. Muslims can pray it in the mosque or at home and it is named after the time in which it is performed.
In the beginning, the Fajr prayer can be performed at home just after hearing Azan (the call for prayer) as this is the announcement that the time for prayer has begun and the Sunnah is to wait for the end Azan to start performing any prayer.
How to pray fajr sunnah and fard?
Before we explain how to pray both Fajr sunnah and fard prayers, you have to know the difference between Sunnah Prayer (also known as Nafl prayer) and Fard Prayer.
Sunnah prayer is not obligatory but it is preferred, and if you left it you will not be punished. On the contrary, Fard Prayer is obligatory, this means it is a huge sign to leave it and there is a punishment for anyone who leaves a Fard prayer intentionally in the afterlife.
For Sure it is better to perform both Fard Prayer in addition to Sunnah Prayer to get the full reward promised by Allah because the Sunnah prayer emends any fault or a mistake that may happen in Fard Prayer.
Also, it is important to know that the difference between performing Fard Fajar Prayer and Sunnah Fajar Prayer is only the Intention but the steps of praying are just the same.
So before Fard prayer, you have to intend in your heart that you are going to perform Fard prayer, and before performing Sunnah prayer you have to intend that in your heart before performing as well.
When is fajr prayer?
Every prayer has a certain time to be performed as the Holy Quran says: “Indeed, the prayer is on the believers prescribed at a fixed time.” “إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَوْقُوتًا”, so we have to commit to the specific time for each prayer.
Fajr prayer time is determined from the beginning of the dawn until the sunrise according to each city and country, so it differs from one city to another and you can perform it after hearing the call for prayer (Azan) from your nearest mosque or local T.V or Radio in the Islamic countries or you can get it from the internet according to your time zone and prayers calendar applications.
What time does fajr prayer come in?
As we said that 5 obligatory prayers have a specific time to be performed and it is a must that you pray each prayer at its fixed time unless you have an excuse like oversleeping or forgetting. Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) explained to his companions that Salat Fajr time starts from the dawn time which begins by the end of the night and the beginning of the sunrise, this means that you can determine fajar prayer time by the start of the darkness of night vanishing which is coldest weather period during the whole day and night.
Can you pray fajr after sunrise?
Yes, you can pray salatul fajr after sunrise.
Some Muslims used to wake up late because they sleep late
If the believer misses some prayers; falls asleep or forgets; What is required of him is to make up for it, and he does not delay that to another prayer. For the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: Whoever sleeps and forgets to pray, So let him pray it if he mentions it. He has no penance except that. This is how the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, so it is necessary to be at home until he performs the prayer that he slept about or forgot, and it has no time for prohibition.
Except at sunset he hastened, and likewise if he forgets Maghrib or Isha and then mentions it during the night, he hastens and hastened to do so, and he does not delay to another prayer. Neither for men nor women. Rather, it is obligatory to pray on time. The man prays it in the congregation and goes out to the mosques in the homes of Allah Almighty with the Muslims, and the woman prays at home on her time before the sun. It is not permissible for a Muslim man or woman to delay the dawn prayer until after the sun has risen; Because the time limit is when the sun rises, and if the sun rises, the time comes out, so it is not permissible for a Muslim to delay it at all until sunrise, nor for a Muslim woman either. [Maryam: 59] It means loss and destruction, and it was said that the void is a valley in Hell, far below its bottom, with an evil taste. Time we ask Allah for safety, as for the one who abandons it, he is a disbeliever

Is it ok to pray fajr after sunrise?
Responding to this question, It was stated that a Muslim should perform the Fajr prayer as soon as he wakes up, so if his prayer was before sunrise, then it is a performance, and if after sunrise it is a delayed prayer as the Messenger of Allah, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him and his family, said: “The time for the morning prayer is from the rising of the dawn as long as the sun has not risen.” Narrated by Muslims, and based on it, the time for dawn prayer begins and the time for dawn prayer extends. Because he, may Allah’s prayers and peace be upon him, said: “Whoever catches up with one rak’ah of the dawn prayer before the sun rises, he has caught up with the dawn prayer.” [Bukhari]
Can I pray isha before fajr?
As well as it is not desirable to pray Fajr Prayer late it is also not preferable to pray Isha prayer late from its fixed time.
(Meaning that if you slept early before Isha prayer and woke up early before Fajr, can you perform Isha prayer?); It is somewhat disliked to delay isha past half the night, yet is still considered to be on-time (ADA) as long as performed before the break of dawn (fajr).
So It is better to pray to Isha before one sleeps, and in general, disliked to sleep after maghrib prayer. But it is acceptable as long as it is done before the fajr prayer call as told by most Muslim scholars.
How to pray fajr after sunrise?
Waking up early for the salat fajr became a struggle for some people. If you don’t wake up on a certain day to perform fajr prayers, then perform the prayer as soon as you wake up by performing the two obligatory (fard rakahs) of Fajr first and then perform the two sunnah rakahs (non-obligatory) but it is better to get the full reward of salatul fajr as stated by Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
Then we come to another important question which is:
How to pray fajr qaza with zuhr?
And this means that someone overslept and didn’t perform fajar pray and woke up after Zuhr prayer time came or he woke up by the time of Zuhr Prayer call (Azan) awake him), so if this happens someday, then it is preferable to perform Al-fajr prayer (Qaza-Qada) before you pray Zuhr Prayer, and the meaning of Qaza is “ you won’t get the full reward of the prayer because you didn’t perform it on time, but still you have to perform it”. This is the best way to perform Fajr Prayer Qaza with zuhr if you missed it due to oversleeping, but you have to be more careful regularly and perform every prayer at its fixed time.
Can you pray fajr earlier?
According to all prayer timing, all of us have to be committed to what prophet Muhammed (PBUH) delivered us from the Holy Quran and his Sunnah so we are committed to a fixed time for every prayer and that includes al fajr prayer time.
So you can not perform Al-fajr prayer earlier or before its time even though you are traveling early before the fajr prayer call (Azan).
How late can you pray fajr?
As we mentioned before, we have to commit to the precise timing for each prayer as we have been told by Prophet Muhammed (PBUH).
So if you intend to delay the Fajr prayer until its time ends, and that is when the sun rises, then doing that is a major sin.
But if you mean to delay it in time so that you do it before sunrise, but after the beginning of the time has passed, then this is contrary to the Sunnah. The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, used to pray the morning prayer at the beginning of its time.
Some scholars considered the time for the morning prayer, some of them disapproved of delaying prayer without an excuse, and some of them prohibited it.
What is the earliest time to pray fajr?
It is not permissible for a Muslim to pray before the call to prayer. and the prayer is not considered valid if he performs it before its fixed time. This is because the beginning of the time for prayer and hearing the call to prayer is a reason for the obligation to pray for Muslims. According to this, a Muslim can pray Fajr Prayers when he hears the call to salatul fajr directly, but it is better to wait for the end of the prayer call as Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) did.
Accordingly, It is permissible for a Muslim to pray during the call to prayer, and his prayer is valid, and he does not have to repeat it; Because hearing the call to prayer is a sign that the time has begun, so if the worshiper hears “Allah is great” and immediately goes and performs the prayer his prayer is valid, and he does not have to wait for the call to finish completely, but he should listen to the call to prayer and repeat with him to obtains the complete reward that the Prophet (PBUH) spoke of.
So the earliest time to perform salat fajr is at the beginning of dawn entrance and this is the fixed time for praying of it and he can not perform it before that time at all.
Can you pray nafl after fajr?
Prophet Muhammed advised us to perform 2 Rakahs Nafl (Sunnah Prayer) before Al-fajr prayer so we can get the full reward from Allah in case we don’t perform the obligatory prayer in its best form.
Muslim scholars have agreed that the Sunnah of the Fajr prayer starts from the time of the dawn until the Muslim performs the obligatory Fajr prayer, and the evidence for this is the saying of Abdullah bin Omar – may Allah be pleased with him: I learned from Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) to perform two rak’ahs before Fajr prayer, so this indicates that Nafl prayer of salatul fajr has to be before salat fajr not after it.
Fajar prayer Nafl is considered a confirmed regular Sunnah, and although it is a confirmed Sunnah, the Muslim is not sinning by leaving it, but he has missed out on himself a great reward and great bounty, and the evidence for this is that Lady Aisha, the mother of the believers – may God be pleased with her told us: that Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) was very careful about the two Rakah’s Nafl (Sunnah) before fajr prayers.
So It is desirable for anyone who missed the Nafl (Sunnah) prayer on time to perform it before Al-fajr prayer as Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) did, has given the choice between performing it after the obligatory Fajr prayer or postponing it until the time for prohibition ends (which is after the sun has risen as mentioned by Muslim Scholars).
Summary
The conclusion is that it is not permissible for any Muslim, nor for any Muslim woman, to delay fajr prayers beyond its time, neither dawn until sunrise, nor noon until the time of the afternoon, nor afternoon until the time of sunset, nor until the sun turns yellow, nor sunset until the disappearance of twilight, nor evening until half Rather,
every prayer must be offered on time, this is the duty of Muslims, men, and women, the man prays it in congregation with the Muslims, and he does not have the right to delay it from the congregation,
and he does not have the right to delay it beyond the time, and the woman has to pray it on time in her home,
and she does not have the right to delay it about the time, and if sleep may predominate at dawn, then the alarm clock should be set and confirm the time so that when the time comes,
it will alert them to the time of prayer; Because this is one of the reasons that help in doing good, and if he has someone to wake him up, then praise be to Allah. T
The bottom line is that Muslim men and women should pay attention to this matter.
If they have someone to wake them up for Fajar prayer, praise be to Allah. The man gets up and prays with the Muslims, and until the woman gets up and prays on time,
this is the duty, and whatever helps in the duty is obligatory
