Makeup Steps for Beginners
1. Prepare your skin
Before you start applying makeup, it's crucial to prep your skin with skincare products. "Always clean and moisturize for your skin type," says Sesnek. "Makeup will never be right without it." If your skin isn't properly prepared, you won't get an even, flawless finish in online beauty supply store. Conversely, when your concealer gets sticky, your foundation can look heavy and tend to drier parts of your complexion.2. Primer
Not all primers are created equal, so for best results, it's best to choose the right primer for your skin type. If you need help picking the perfect primer for your skin, we've also rounded up the best primers here based on Ipster's reviews. "Apply the primer in a fine, clear layer," says Sesnek. If you use heavy hands, the primer will start to pill or pill (not the way we want it). Instead, focus the thin coat on the forehead, cheeks, and chin. "This will make it blur and matte in those areas (aka the T-zone), which are often the most oily areas."
3. Grab your foundation and concealer
Now that your skin is ready, you can start applying your makeup. While generally, you'll start with foundation and then concealer, in some cases, you'll want to use concealer first. If you're not sure, our IPSY story on whether to apply foundation or concealer first is a good refresher.
Dab a few points of foundation on your T-zone, focusing on your forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin. Next, use a foundation brush to blend it in. While you can of course use a makeup sponge or even your fingers, using a foundation brush is quick and easy, making it a great choice for beginners (and anyone looking for a simple makeup routine). For natural results, start with a small amount and mix well. For more on the technique, check out our story on how to apply foundation with a brush.
Now that your foundation is applied, you can apply concealer. Focus on any area you want to hide: under the eyes, around the nostrils, and any blemishes or dark spots. When it comes to masking, it's important to dab, not drag. "When applying concealer, you never want to apply it, but always dab it on and let it saturate the area you want to cover," says Castro.
Dab on blemishes with ring finger, concealer brush or sponge and dab. To hide under the eyes, draw two inverted triangles under the eyes and dab to blend the edges into the foundation. Not only is the inverted triangle technique super easy, but it also illuminates the entire face for a gorgeous glow.
