Over my extensive career in the real estate sector I have found three common stumbling blocks which prevents individuals and groups from planning for the future. The first is alack of information, without having all the facts it is almost impossible to start the planning process. You cannot build a house without knowing all of the dimensions and you can’t create a property plan the the future without knowing all your options. The second stumbling block is the magnitude of the process, individuals or committees start thinking about all the things that will have to get completed to achieve their goals. Tasks such as hiring lawyers, builders, renovators and even more stressful is thinking about all the “stuff” that has been accumulated in the home or building after 20, 30, 50 or 100 years of ownership. The most common stumbling block is fear, the fear of making the wrong decision which might impact an individual or a whole congregation. Whether you are downsizing from the family home or are part of a committee contemting the future of a 200 year old church fear will be a constant companion. The only way to minimize the fear is to havea detailed plan showing not only your goals for the future but how these goals will be achieved
