Plastic bags take ten to twenty years to fully decompose

Novamont's Mater-Bi biodegrades in seawater

Using renewable raw materials, Mater-Bi(r) is a biodegradable, compostable plastic, which is used to make packaging, toys, catering and accessories. This material has many advantages, including the ability to degrade at room temperature, which is much faster than traditional petroleum derived plastics.

The use of renewable raw materials has been recognized as a key way to help control greenhouse gases. These materials use atmospheric CO2 that is absorbed by plants during photosynthesis. Combined with Mater-Bi's compostability, they can help keep carbon in the ground and reduce CO2 emissions.

The Mater-Bi family of products has several grades, ranging from a thicker, sturdier MB bag to a thinner, more biodegradable PS plate. All Mater-Bi products can be composted. The composting process restores organic materials to the soil, reduces CO2 emissions, and helps maintain soil fertility.
