What is a Check Valve?
A Check valve is classed as a self-actuated, straight-line valve. An interesting feature of this valve is the possibility to set the valve opening with a specific pressure value, to ensure that the fluid reaches users, with a certain pressure value.
A Check valve is a mechanical device that allows only unidirectional fluid flow. It is also called 'One-way valve', 'Clack valve' or 'Non-return valve' since it only allows media to flow in one direction.
It has two media ports, one inlet and one output. Usually, a check valve is formed by a shutter, a spring and a gasket.
How does a Check Valve work?
The operating principle is very simple: as soon as the fluid pumped into the pipe reaches a pressure value that overcomes the force of the spring, the shutter will open and it will let the fluid flow through. The higher the fluid pressure, the bigger the shutter opening will be. When the pressure value falls below the value that counteracts the force of the spring, the shutter closes, preventing any backflow.

Types of Check Valves-
Also known as Silent Check Valve, a Dual Plate Check Valve is an automatic mechanical non-return valve, which opens with a forward flow and shut to a reversal inflow. It consists of 2 discs attached to the valve body by a pin and operated by the action of springs, which immediately start closing the valve when the fluid stops.
Forging steel check valves are compact, sturdy, and ideal for high-pressure and high-temperature applications. These are non-return valves that only operate in one direction. The body is built of forged steel and is available in two-port configurations: full and standard. A forged steel lid sits atop the body.
Swing check valves use a swinging disc on a hinge to regulate the flow of a liquid, gas, or solid stream in one direction while preventing backflow from contaminating the source fluid. In other words, like all check valves, the swing valve is a non-return valve.
Swing check valves are the most common type of large check valve, and a typical example is a toilet flushing valve that rises and lowers. Swing valves normally require some type of physical motion to activate them, therefore manual twisting of the handle is a common subject. In some internal pipe systems, however, a spring check valve is integrated with the swing valve to eliminate the need for human intervention.
