An automated external defibrillator (AED) is a medical tool used to diagnose ventricular fibrillation in patients and shock them with electricity to get their heart rhythm back to normal. The primary benefit of having an AED at work is that it might save a life. The most common cause of mortality in persons over 40 is sudden cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, only about 10% of persons who experience cardiac arrest survive; this is a dismal survival rate.
On a victim who is lying on a conductive surface, do not use an Automated External Defibrillator. Others may receive the shock if they are near conductive objects like metal bleachers or sheet metal. Use an AED only on children who are at least 90 pounds and 8 years old. AEDs work.
