MIT researchers have created smart textiles that snugly conform to the body in order to sense the wearer's posture and motions using a novel fabrication process. They used this method to produce a "smart" shoe and mat, and they later developed a hardware and software system to gather and analyse pressure sensor data in real time.
The researchers were able to significantly increase the accuracy of pressure sensors woven into multilayered Smart and Interactive Textiles by incorporating a special kind of plastic yarn and using heat to slightly melt it a procedure called thermoforming.
