Based on a high molecular weight polypropylene-based binder system, ideal ceramic powder properties for injection moulding include a near-spherical particle shape, a particle size distribution with particles in the size range of 0.2-6 m (median 1 m), and a surface area of 3 m2 g1. Low molecular weight binder systems could be used to injection mould finer ceramic powders, but they have issues with particle packing.
In Metal and Ceramic Injection Molding, the use of very low molecular weight binders like water and alcohol leads to mixing and moulding issues with concentrated suspensions. These binders have low boiling points, which makes them more prone to forming voids, but they are more likely to diffuse through the small interstices in fine ceramic particle assemblies.
