To detect precipitation, Weather Rada uses a solid-state or tube transmitter to fire energy pulses, commonly referred to as radar beams, into the atmosphere. This concentrated beam emanates from an antenna (also known as a radar dish). The weather disc is where the data is processed into different parameters whenever the radar beam encounters precipitation such as rain or hail. A meteorologist can use this to examine and interpret weather that is occuring hundreds of kilometres from the radar.

By measuring the strength and speed of the pulse returning to the Weather Radar site, weather forecasters can estimate the distance to an approaching storm and the amount of precipitation. Numerous other helpful determinations, such as precipitation type, motion, and turbulence, can also be done, like recognising the flying debris that a tornado would produce.
