A recent articlepublished in The Sun certainly gave us food for thought. It said research hadbeen carried out which found a quarter of homeowners who had bought a propertyover the past decade had done so based purely on the home’s appearance – onlyto soon afterwards discover issues with its structure, plumbing or electrics.
The newspaper citeda study by OnePoll that discovered 16% of respondents claimed the colour of aproperty’s front door could deter them completely when looking for a new home.Meanwhile, 18% admitted they wouldn’t buy a given property if the living roomcouldn’t accommodate a sufficiently large TV.
Signs that homebuyers don’t alwaysprioritise well
Most alarmingly forour Wandsworth, Harrow and Bermondseyplumbers hereat PGS Plumbers, only about a fifthof those purchasing their most recent home took into account the condition andservice history of the boiler.
It’s perhapsunsurprising, then, that almost one in four respondents encountered problemswith their boiler during their first 12 months in their new home, with 17%having to unexpectedly pay for a new boiler.
Other findings ofthe survey of 2,000 homeowners included that a tenth of participants realisednone of their furnishings were suitable when they moved in, while the sameproportion of homebuyers discovered that the built-in appliances didn’t work.
Thankfully, however, the research also showed signs of changing attitudes towards some ofthe things that truly matter when deciding on a new home.
Four in 10respondents, for example, admitted that they should have better scrutinisedtheir current property’s energy efficiency before committing to a purchase. However, homeowners are now nearly three times as likely to consider a home’senergy efficiency as “very important” compared to 10 years ago, and just 3% nowsay it still isn’t important to them.
Sustainability iscertainly much more of a watchword among homebuyers than it once was, theOnePoll figures revealing that they were now twice as likely to regard aproperty’s sustainability as “very important” than was the case a decadeearlier. Overall, 86% of the study participants agreed that houses should be asenergy-efficient as possible.
