Deep Learning computer programmes go through stages akin to how a toddler learns to recognise the dog. Each algorithm in the hierarchy applies a nonlinear transformation to its input and then uses what it has learned to produce a statistical model as its output. Until the result is accurate enough to accept, iterations continue. The number of processing layers that data must pass through is referred to as "deep" processing.
After being shown a training set of images, a computer programme using Deep Learning algorithms can quickly and accurately sort through millions of images to identify those that contain dogs. Unlike a toddler, who may take weeks or even months to grasp the idea of a dog.
