What is a preimplantation geneticdiagnosis?
Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis(PGD) is a technique for analyzing embryos to differentiate those who arecarriers of a genetic defect from those who are genetically normal.
The objective of this technique is toavoid the birth of children with chromosomal abnormalities since embryosdiagnosed as abnormal are discarded for transfer. This increases theprobability of embryo implantation and the probability of successful in vitrofertilization (IVF) treatment.
PGD is a method that makes it possibleto eliminate the probability of transmission of genetic diseases from parentsto children. PGD detects point mutations in embryos that cause serious geneticdiseases.
