A cosmetic contact lens is made to alter how the eye looks. Refractive error may also be fixed using these lenses. Although many brands of contact lenses are lightly tinted to make them easier to handle, cosmetic lenses worn to change eye color are far less common, accounting for only 3% of contact lens fits in 2004. Non-corrective cosmetic contact lenses are classified as ornamental contact lenses by the FDA in the US. Like any contact lens, cosmetic lenses carry risks of mild to serious complications, including ocular redness, irritation and infection. Similar to conventional Contact Lens Market, coloured lenses must be purchased with a valid prescription in the United States due to their medical nature. Color contacts can be purchased for cosmetic purposes by people with perfect vision, but they still need to have their eyes examined for a "plano" prescription, or one that corrects for no vision. This is done for safety purposes so that the lenses can fit without causing the eye to itch or turn red.
