The Grade pay of a Group ‘A’ officer starts with 5400 Gp (level 10). For the non-technical postings, UPSC is the major recruiting body for the Group A posts at the central level.

Group B: It comes under level 6 to 9 in 7′th CPC. All the state police officers, section officers in different ministries, GST/Customs inspectors, Income tax inspectors, Preventive officers etc. come under group B. The grade pay of group b officers is 4200, 4600, 4800 and 5400 (Group B gazetted). The basic pay of a Group B officer is 35,400 (level 6) and it goes up to 53,100 (level 9).

Group C: it comes under level 1 to 5 in 7′th CPC. All the Head Clerks, Clerks, Tax assistant, Typist in courts, Stenographer come under group ‘C’. They are generally recruited via SSC CHSL (COMBINED HIGHER SECONDARY LEVEL) Entrance Exam. The basic pay of Group C and D employees is 18,000 (level 1) to 29,200 (level 5).

Group D: The Group D or Class-IV officials are generally selected via the SSC MTS (MULTI TASKING STAFF) Entrance Examination. These belong to the lowest category of government officials. They are generally semi-skilled workers. Peons, sweepers, gatekeepers, cleaners are some examples of Group D posts.
