Why Is The CUET Exam Getting So Much Flack From Students?
The CUET (Central University Entrance Test) was instituted to standardize central university admissions through an objective test. This move was aimed at reducing the marking disparity / bias across different state boards while allowing students to use a single score to apply for more than 90+ reputed universities in India (including 40+ central universities). This year was the first ever edition of the exam and it was marred with several logistical issues and hiccups. From server issues to exam slot cancellations, students have been vehemently complaining about the inefficacy of the NTA in conducting the exam.
The UGC chairman has also indicated that there may be a chance of deliberate sabotage which may have been the reason for the issues. The exam was supposed to be wrapped up within 3 weeks but will now be stretching beyond 6 weeks. Many students have been forced to take up expensive seats in private colleges because universities have already initiated their admissions. Several experts are also questioning the indirect impact on the exam on conventional schooling. Many feel that shifting focus from board exams to objective tests such as the CUET will increase the relevance and need for coaching institutes which may not be accessible to every stratum in society.
The NTA (National Testing Agency) is conducting three of the most competitive exams in the country this year – NEET, JEE Mains & CUET. Given the scale of these exams, the body is facing several challenges. Students have been aggressively voicing their concerns on social media and are demanding that the body take appropriate action to alleviate major issues.
