When used on broad areas or on severely burned skin, Silver Sulfadiazine may enter the systemic bloodstream and cause side effects akin to those of other sulfonamides. Rashes or erythema multiforme are examples of hypersensitivity reactions that occur in between 0.1% and 1.0% of people. Other Silver Sulfadiazine, such as antibacterials, thiazide diuretics, and sulfonylurea anti-diabetics, are known to cause this reaction, but there is conflicting information regarding the likelihood of cross-allergies.
Local argyria (skin discoloration) can result from the incorporation of silver ions, particularly if the treated area is exposed to ultraviolet light. Only extreme long-term usage or repeated treatment on severely inflamed burns has been associated with generalised argyria and Silver Sulfadiazine accumulation in the kidneys, liver, and retina. Anemia and interstitial nephritis are potential side effects of generalised argyria.
