The term " Poultry" refers to domesticated birds that are kept for food, including chickens, poussins, turkeys, ducks, and geese as well as less common species like squab (young pigeons), and ostrich. Although the meat of game birds, such quail and Canada geese, is harder than that of farm-raised birds, it can still be served in a similar manner. One of the most extensively consumed food animals worldwide, chickens and ducks may be found in almost all major cuisines.

A group of breeds that have evolved in particular geographic or climatic areas, such as Asia, England, America, etc., are referred to as a class.

The term "breed" refers to a group of birds with similar weight, bone shape, and other traits.

Variety is a subset of a breed that can be identified by its colorations, shapes, comb types, or feather patterns. For instance, there are different types of the leghorn breed, including single-comb white leghorns and rose-comb white leghorns.

The term "strain" designates a certain breeder who has done the breeding on the bird and has added specific commercial characteristics to the strain. For instance, Mr. Chukwuemeka N. is a breeder of the Plymouth Rock variety, which is white in colour and has American roots.
