A system for administering internal radiation therapy to breast cancer patients following surgery to remove the cancer. Balloon catheter radiation only affects the area of the breast where the cancer was discovered. A small balloon on the end of a catheter (thin tube) is inserted into the empty space left by the surgery after a patient has had a lumpectomy to remove the cancer. After that, the balloon is filled with liquid and left in place. The catheter is used to insert radioactive seeds into the balloon twice a day for five days and then remove them. The catheter and balloon are removed after the treatment is completed. Intracavitary brachytherapy and partial breast irradiation therapy are both forms of balloon catheter radiation (PBRT). Also known as MammoSite.
