According to Yvonne Buys, MD, ophthalmologists can select from a variety of the newest intraocular pressure (IOP) measurement tools, each of which has advantages and disadvantages. In his overview of tonometer technology, Dr. Buys noted that while new technology is always being developed, nothing has yet been able to completely replace the Goldmann applanation Tonometry Device.
Dr. Buys is a professor at the University of Toronto at Canada's Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences. According to Dr. Buys, "The Goldmann is still the gold standard." But if you can't use the Goldmann, you need another instrument like Tonometry Device to measure IOP. Researchers have created alternatives as a result of numerous limitations. Goldmann readings can be impacted by variations in the cornea, such as corneal thickness, curvature, elasticity or rigidity, and humidity.
