Since 1978, ground stations and aircraft have communicated via the digital data link system known as ACARS (pronounced AY-CARS). In the beginning, it was solely dependent on VHF channels, but more recently, additional methods of data transfer were added, considerably expanding its geographic reach. Additionally, there has been a sharp increase in the integration of Aircraft Communication Systems with the ACARS link. Both have caused its use as a tool for operational communications to develop quickly.
The ability for automatic and manual messaging initiation is currently a feature of modern ACARS technology. All of the different avionic parts of ACARS have specific ARINC guidelines.
