Three Reasons Spotify Could Never be the OS of Music
The majority of you are probably aware of the recent changes Spotify has made to its platform being open for developers to build applications on. In March, the social music service will be opening up an app store in order to help app developers get paid for their work. Last week, I read an extremely interesting article in the Guardian entitled “Spotify The company must transform ourselves into the OS of Music.”
I am a regular fan of their free edition of Spotify I am a huge fan of what they are doing for social music but there are a few issues that I believe will stop it from becoming the OS for music. Spotify playlist volgers kopen
The firstis its relationship with Facebook that makes users sign in with a Facebook account. Even though just about everybody who lives uses Facebook users, many are slightly hesitant to share their listening habits, and having to login in to one system to use a different system. Although some may argue you can easily change to private listening but it will disorienting a lot of people away. With VEVO’s new deal with Facebook, it requires the same procedure, which is why I’m not going to use VEVO more than I have in the past.
It seems like the way Facebook operates, all or none. If Spotify will ever be an OS of Music, it must be separated from Facebook or come up with a new version that doesn’t need users to log in through Facebook. Jay-Z released an album to release a while back that was titled “The Blueprint 2 The Gift and the Curse,” and in my view, an all-in deal with Facebook is definitely a gift and a curse.’
The second point is that Spotify and the recording industry must figure out a way to pay artists more fairly for playing music on streaming. Major record labels love Spotify as they have shares, and artist, well…While people argue that listening to music streaming boosts the sales of physical albums I’ve been using Spotify since it was first introduced in the U.S. and I have yet to purchase an album after hearing that it was on Spotify. Third, services such as iTunes and Rhapsody remain the most dominant digital music service within the U.S. They are both independent from Facebook. Both services will continue challenge Spotify by introducing new social features. Rhapsody recently topped 1 million paying customers and is now the most popular streaming service for premium artists in the U.S. iTunes failed to get a warm response from Ping However, I think they’ll leverage the mobile app to provide an integrated service with social features that will challenge Spotify’s dominance in the world of social music.
