A non-digestible oligosaccharide called polydextrose is a common ingredient in most food-related industries. It is a glucose oligomer that has been randomly linked and contains trace amounts of sorbitol and citric acid. PDX has a reported energy value of 1 kcal/g and can't be easily hydrolyzed by mammalian digestive enzymes because of its random bonds.
Due to these characteristics, PDX is now widely recognised to have physiological effects that are comparable to those of other dietary fibres and to have prebiotic potential. Prebiotics in the diet have been shown to specifically stimulate the growth and/or activity of one or a small number of intestinal bacteria linked to a variety of physiological health benefits.
