A device designed to replace or enhance the natural function of the retina or the visual pathway in patients who have lost their vision due to retinal disorders.

For people with severe retinal diseases, an artificial retina is an electronic device that mimics the sense of vision. The system is made up of eyeglasses that have a tiny camera attached to them. The camera can take pictures and wirelessly transmit them to a microprocessor, which turns the data into electrical signals. Bypassing the dead photoreceptor cells, it then transmits these signals to a receiver implanted on the eye, which receives them directly from the retina's remaining functional cells.
