A subset of thermoplastic synthetic resins in the polyamide (nylon) family known as Polyphthalamide (also known as PPA, High Performance Polyamide) is defined as having at least 55% of the moles of the carboxylic acid portion of the repeating unit in the polymer chain made up of a combination of terephthalic (TPA) and isophthalic (IPA) acids. The melting point, glass transition temperature, chemical resistance, and stiffness of polymers are increased when aromatic diacids replace aliphatic diacids in the polymer's backbone.

In applications requiring high temperature resistance, such as automotive powertrain components, the housing for high temperature electrical connectors, and many other uses, PPA-based resins are moulded into parts to replace metals.
