The glomeruli, the tiny filtering units inside your kidney where blood is cleaned, can be attacked and harmed by a variety of illnesses and conditions, which can then impair the function of your kidneys. Glomerular diseases are the name given to these illnesses and conditions, which can arise from a variety of causes. A form of glomerular disease known as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis describes kidney scarring (sclerosis). Only a small portion of each glomerulus (filter) is damaged at first, and Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis scarring only affects those glomeruli. Both children and adults can have focal segmental glomerulosclerosis.

One of the most prevalent root causes of primary glomerular disease in adults is focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS). 35 percent of all cases of adult kidney biopsy for proteinuria evaluation involve FSGS, and up to 80 percent of cases in patients of African American descent. However, the disease affects people of all ages equally.
