A class of materials called bioresorbable polymers is frequently employed for temporary implant applications. Through hydrolysis, these materials deteriorate over time. Lactic acid and glycolic acid, the byproducts of hydrolysis, are each further degraded and excreted by the body as part of routine metabolism.
Certain medical applications can benefit from the use of Bioresorbable Polymerss. When the body requires temporary support while healing tissues, the polymers can be adjusted to degrade at a specific rate. Medical devices can be outgrown by children, necessitating a second surgery to remove them. A bioresorbable, however, will degrade and be safely absorbed by the body.
