An optical fibre doped with rare-earth elements like erbium, ytterbium, neodymium, dysprosium, praseodymium, thulium, and holmium serves as the active gain medium in a fibre laser (or fibre laser in British English). They share a connection with lasing-free doped fibre amplifiers, which amplify light. In addition to providing gain, fibre nonlinearities like stimulated Raman scattering and four-wave mixing can also act as gain media for a fibre laser.

The fact that the Fiber Laser light is generated and delivered by a medium that is naturally flexible makes fibre lasers superior to other types of lasers because it makes it simpler to deliver the laser light to the target and focusing point. This is crucial for metal and polymer folding, laser welding, and cutting.
