An optical fibre doped with rare-earth elements like erbium, ytterbium, neodymium, dysprosium, praseodymium, thulium, and holmium serves as the active gain medium in a fibre laser (or fibre laser in British English). They share a connection with lasing-free doped fibre amplifiers, which amplify light. In addition to providing gain, fibre nonlinearities like stimulated Raman scattering and four-wave mixing can also act as gain media for a fibre laser.
The fact that the Fiber Laser light is generated and delivered by a medium that is naturally flexible makes fibre lasers superior to other types of lasers because it makes it simpler to deliver the laser light to the target and focusing point.
