Numerous clinical trials have been conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of Orlistat in the treatment of obesity. These studies have consistently shown that orlistat is effective in promoting weight loss and improving various health outcomes.
A meta-analysis of 11 randomized controlled trials involving over 5,000 participants found that Orlistat resulted in a statistically significant weight loss of 2.9 kg (6.4 lbs) compared to placebo over a 12-month period. This weight loss was accompanied by improvements in various metabolic parameters, including blood pressure, lipid levels, and glucose metabolism.
Another randomized controlled trial involving 743 obese patients found that treatment with Orlistat for 2 years resulted in a greater reduction in body weight. When used with a low-calorie, low-fat diet, the gastric lipase inhibitor orlistat is used to help overweight persons, age 18 and older, lose weight. It works by preventing the absorption of 25% of the fat in a meal. Alli and Xenical are two of the various brand names for orlistat that are offered.
