The Octapeptide Octreotide Pharmacologically Resembles Somatostatin
Octreotide

Octreotide is a peptide medication used to treat acromegaly, diarrhoea brought on by metastatic carcinoid tumours, and tumours that secrete vasoactive intestinal peptides. Acromegaly is a condition brought on by too much growth hormone (GH), which promotes the expansion of bodily tissues and disrupts metabolism.  It usually develops from a tumour that releases growth hormone from the anterior pituitary. Typically, organomegaly and insulin resistance can also occur, along with abnormally huge feet, hands, and faces. Acromegaly is a potentially fatal condition that needs ongoing care.

Octreotide is administered intravenously to treat acromegaly and to lessen the symptoms of diarrhoea and flushing brought on by carcinoid tumours and/or vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIPoma) tumours. 8 Patients who tolerate and respond well to injectable octreotide and lanreotide are treated for acromegaly over the long term using the delayed-release oral formulation.
