The Inorganic Compound Sodium Carbonate, Commonly Referred To As Soda Ash Or Washing Soda, Is Composed Of Sodium Carbonate
Sodium Carbonate

Sodium Carbonate plays a critical role in many different industries and applications. Its versatility and alkaline properties make it an essential ingredient in glass manufacturing, water treatment, detergent manufacturing, food and beverage production, paper manufacturing, textile industry, metal cleaning and processing, and pharmaceutical industry. Without sodium carbonate, many of the products and processes that we rely on in our daily lives would not be possible.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) are two compounds that are quite similar. The distinction is in the amount of water absorbed into the molecule. When baking soda is baked, it decomposes to generate washing soda, releasing carbon dioxide and water.  Washing soda decomposes over time to generate sodium oxide, which emits carbon dioxide. Warmer temperatures hasten the breakdown process.
