Among the main Syphilis causes are the bacterium Treponema pallidum. When this bacterium enters damaged skin or mucous membranes in the genitalia, it causes infection. Although it can spread in other ways, sexual contact is the most common way that syphilis is spread.

By coming into contact with a chancre, or sore, that is characteristic of syphilis, a person can contract the disease. Chancres can develop in, on, or near the lips, mouth, anus, rectum, and penis. Syphilis Transmission can occur during oral, anal, or vaginal sex.
