Chitin
The main component of cell walls found in fungi but absent in plants is chitin. A variety of important pathogen elicitors, including Chitin and its components called chitin oligosaccharides, are recognised by plant cells and cause PTI. A T-DNA insertional line and a Ds-transposon line were discovered to be totally unresponsive to chitin treatment through a genetic screen for Arabidopsis mutants that displayed different responses to chitin. The knockout mutants exhibit decreased resistance to incompatible fugal pathogens and are unable to respond to chitin elicitor to produce ROS burst and MAPK activation.
