The MeP and formaldehyde reaction occurs on a fixed bed of catalyst. This caesium oxide on silica catalyst yields high selectivity to Methyl Methacrylate from MeP. The catalyst is poisoned by the creation of a modest amount of heavy, relatively involatile chemicals. In a primary distillation, the reactor product stream is separated to generate a crude MMA product stream free of water, MeP, and formaldehyde. The formaldehyde dehydration process recycles unreacted MeP and water. Vacuum distillations are used to purify MMA (>99.9%). The separated streams are reintroduced into the process, with the exception of a tiny heavy ester purge stream that is disposed of in a thermal oxidizer and the heat recovered for use in the process.
