During the course of chemical processes, many traditional solvents are used. Piperylene sulfone is a polar aprotic solvent with properties similar to dimethylsulfoxide. It decomposes easily and yields trans-1, 3-pentadiene and sulfur dioxide. The process for polymerizing Piperylene involves treating it with a hydrocarbon solvent at temperatures between 0 C. and 100 C. The catalyst, preferably a halide of titanium, contains at least one atom of iodine for every one of titanium. The molar ratio of the two compounds is typically between 0.2 and four millimoles per 100 grams of monomer. The final product is a polymer with a high trans-stereo isomer content.
