It is possible to use digital capture modalities instead of film and digital image files instead of lightboxes, as well as a reading room. An important part of this digital workflow is the PACS (Picture Archiving and Communication System). For example, it may receive digital pictures via the DICOM protocol, archive them, transfer them to other entities via DICOM and answer inquiries for research from other network nodes, and produce portable media containing the digital images.
