Not everyone was convinced of its effectiveness for such reasons, and in two letters to the Medical Gazette in 1850, John Snow pointed out that, while chloroform had probably been used in a number of attempted crimes, there was no indication that its usage had been successful. According to Snow, at the time, there were only two incidents where it was proven that chloroform was used, insensibility was not induced, and the offenders were apprehended.
