A Biomarker (short for biological marker) is an objective assessment of what is happening in a cell or organism at any particular time. Biomarkers can act as health-related early warning systems. A Blood Based Biomarker (a quantifiable DNA, RNA, or protein component in the patient's blood) is a component that identifies disorders such as cancer or Alzheimer's disease. Blood-based biomarkers can assist quantify health and disease by providing a measure of an individual's biochemistry from a simple patient blood sample.
