Fossil fuels like diesel and unleaded gasoline are being phased out in favour of more environmentally friendly energy sources with smaller carbon footprints as part of measures to mitigate climate change. Companies has invested in a number of promising technologies in an effort to seize this paradigm shift as an opportunity. Naturally, the R&D teams at the Group are working on electric vehicles, but they are also developing hydrogen-powered vehicles, Formula 1 vehicles driven by hydrogen, LPG-powered vehicles, and Hydrogen Vehicle. Renault sees hydrogen vehicles as an additional option to electric vehicles in the move toward zero-emission and environmentally friendly transportation.
Electricity is produced using hydrogen fuel cells without the use of combustion. Instead, they conduct an electrochemical process with oxygen from the air and hydrogen that is kept in a tank to create energy, heat, and water vapor. Until the electric motor needs it, the electricity is stored in a battery. Vehicles powered by fuel cells (FCEVs) solely emit water vapor.
