Animal Genetics
Following the selection of a breed or crossbreeding system, livestock breeders effect genetic changes by selecting animals that differ from the norm and using them as parents. A single equation, known as the breeders' equation, captures many aspects of livestock selection. The equation for genetic change measured in genetic standard deviations per year is simply intensity of selection times accuracy of Animal Genetics evaluation at selection divided by age of parents when progeny are born (intensityaccuracytime1). Despite their simplicity, the components are interconnected. Changing one frequently changes the other.
