Tissue Engineering
According to Langer and Vacanti, tissue engineering is "an interdisciplinary field that applies engineering and life science principles toward the development of biological substitutes that restore, maintain, or improve [Biological tissue] function or a whole organ." Langer and Vacanti go on to say that there are three types of Tissue Engineering: cells, tissue-inducing substances, and a cells + matrix approach (often referred to as a scaffold). Tissue engineering is also defined as "understanding the principles of tissue growth and applying this knowledge to create functional replacement tissue for clinical use."
