Deicing products made from bio-based propylene glycol were introduced in North America in March 2015, according to announcements from Clariant AG and Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM). These include the bio-based propylene glycol market produced by ADM under the brands "Safewing" and "Octaflo" by Clariant for use in aircraft de-icing fluids. High performance is provided by this propylene glycol, which also has a smaller carbon footprint.
A biotechnology company called METabolic Explorer that develops bio-based chemicals revealed in 2016 that it is concentrating on the development of a method for producing monopropylene glycol (MPG, or 1.2 propanediol) through the fermentation of second-generation cellulose sugars. The METabolic EXplorer site in Saint-Beauzire is where the development process is anticipated to take place.
