The SCR catalyst is made up of a honeycomb structure that is coated with a material that contains the catalytic components. The catalytic material is typically made up of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and vanadium oxide (V2O5), which are mixed together and coated onto the honeycomb structure. The honeycomb structure provides a large surface area for the chemical reactions to take place, which allows for efficient conversion of the NOx emissions into nitrogen gas and water vapor.
Once the Diesel Exhaust Fluid is injected into the exhaust stream, it reacts with the NOx emissions in the SCR catalyst, where a series of chemical reactions take place. First, the urea in the DEF is hydrolyzed into ammonia and carbon dioxide. Next, the ammonia reacts with the NOx emissions, which are made up of nitrogen oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2), to form nitrogen gas (N2) and water vapor (H2O). This chemical reaction is known as selective catalytic reduction (SCR).
