In Addison, Illinois, Concordia University Chicago dates its origins to 1864. The Concordia University System's oldest institution was formerly known as Addison Teachers Seminary. In November 1863, the college purchased 6 acres (2.4 ha) from the West District School Society (now St. Paul Lutheran Church) for the pittance of $10. On June 15, 1864, the cornerstone was laid for the college's new building. Zion Lutheran Church made a construction donation of $3,128.  Construction was delayed by the Civil War, but a nearby vacant two-story tavern building was rented to make sure the new teachers' seminary could start its educational training program on time, on September 1, 1864. 43 The initial year, 43 men and boys, ranging in age from 14 to 33, attended. 

The institution changed its name to Concordia College in 1979 after expanding its education-centered program to become a full liberal arts institution. After eleven years and tremendous growth in its graduate offerings, the school reorganized and changed its legal name to Concordia University in 1990. Since then, the university has gone by the names Concordia University River Forest: 95 (1990-2006) and Concordia University Chicago (2006–present).
